Special Monthly Compensation
Is It Possible for Veterans to Receive More Than a 100% Disability Rating?
SMC, or Special Monthly Compensation are funds that are allocated to help disabled Veterans lead normal lives. The money can be and is often used for in-home assistance that is not a medical professional but is classified under “Aid and Attendance.”
This can be inclusive of things like paying for a care provider or family member to come and do laundry and cleaning your house, help bathing and using the restroom, and helping to feed the Veteran in question.
The various SMC ratings range from a Veteran being able to independently dress themselves, due to an amputation, all the way to a Veteran being completely bedridden.
These funds are not based on any income lost due to a disability/disabilities, but it is more based on the ability to provide Veterans with a higher quality of life.
Often, funds may not be used to pay for in-home aid, but they may go towards helping fund the equipment needed to bring new, assistive technology to a Veterans home.

So, Veterans Can Receive More Than a 100% Rating?
Yes, when your disability rating is calculated, it is separate from whether you qualify for SMC.
Often, we speak to Veterans who have assumed they will receive SMC automatically because they applied for VA Disability, and their rating states that they’ve lost the ability to use their arm or leg.
Said another way, SMC claims are additional benefits to whatever a Veteran is already receiving for through their standard VA Disability compensation.
They won’t receive retroactive back pay for this segment but will start receiving it monthly when approved by the VA.
